Everything you need to know before your first Songkran in Koh Samui. What to pack, what to wear, where to go, how to stay safe — and how to make the most of the best water festival in Southeast Asia from 10 to 15 April 2026.
Songkran is Thailand’s New Year celebration – and in Koh Samui, it is three to six days of controlled chaos, community spirit, and some of the best parties the island produces all year. The official public holiday runs 13 to 15 April, but celebrations in Koh Samui begin as early as 10 April and continue well past the 15th at beach clubs and venues along Chaweng Beach Road.
On the ground, it looks like this: motorbike-mounted water tanks, children with buckets stationed at every roadside, beach clubs running all-day events, and Chaweng Beach Road converted into the island’s biggest water fight by mid-morning on 13 April. If you’re walking anywhere between 10 AM and 4 PM during the main days, expect to get soaked — there is no opting out.
The good news: it is genuinely one of the most joyful public events in Southeast Asia. This guide covers everything you need to go in prepared, stay comfortable, and leave with stories rather than soggy regrets.

Get this list right and you will sail through the week. Get it wrong and you will spend 13 April standing in line at a 7-Eleven trying to dry your passport. Here is what actually matters.
A waterproof phone pouch is non-negotiable. Your phone will get wet. A dry bag or ziplock for wallet, passport copies, and cards is equally important. Leave anything irreplaceable at the hotel.
Quick-dry shorts and a light shirt are the standard. Avoid white — it becomes transparent immediately. Waterproof sandals (Crocs or similar) are ideal. Do not wear shoes you cannot afford to ruin.
Reef-safe SPF 50 sunscreen applied before you step outside. April in Koh Samui is peak heat. You will be outside for hours, wet, and not noticing the burn until the evening. Reapply every two hours.
Carry ฿500–1,000 in a ziplock bag. Many street food vendors and smaller stalls are cash only during Songkran. ATMs can run low on 13 April — withdraw the night before.
Available from ฿80 at 7-Eleven and street vendors across Chaweng. Buy on arrival — you do not need to bring one from home. Mid-size backpack-style soakers are the most popular.
Passport, laptop, good camera, leather accessories, and any footwear worth protecting. Leave them at the hotel. Bring only what you are happy to get soaked.
10 April — Pre-Party Begins
The official holiday hasn’t started, but Chaweng is already moving. Beach clubs open early, restaurants fill up at sunset, and the first Songkran warm-up events kick off in the evening. A good day to arrive, settle in, and scout your ground position for the main event.
11–12 April — Build-Up Days
Water fighting is scattered and low-key during the day. Use these days to explore the island, visit temples, do a boat trip, or eat your way through the menu at HIP Restaurant. Evenings in Chaweng start getting busier. Prices rise noticeably at accommodation and some venues.
13 April — Main Day
The single biggest day of Songkran across Thailand. Chaweng Beach Road becomes the main battleground from around 10 AM. Expect road closures, enormous crowds, non-stop water, and the island’s peak energy. This is the day you dress for total destruction and embrace it.
14–15 April — Wind-Down
Still busy. Water activity slows during the day but evening beach club events continue running at full capacity. A good time to recover, see a different part of the island, or extend your stay if you haven’t already.
Chaweng Beach Road is where Songkran happens in Koh Samui. From roughly 10 AM, the road fills with pickup trucks fitted with water tanks, locals with buckets, vendors selling water guns, and thousands of tourists and residents all engaged in the same glorious nonsense.
Arrive early. If you want a good position, be on the road by 9 AM. By 11 AM it is shoulder-to-shoulder in the main stretch. The action is most intense between 11 AM and 3 PM.
Stay hydrated. You will sweat more than you realise. Carry a bottle of water and stop at a café or HIP Restaurant when needed. The all-day breakfast menu runs from 7 AM and the kitchen stays open until 1 AM.
Know your exit. Crowds make movement slow. Identify the nearest side soi (alley) before you go deep into the main stretch. If you’re staying at a beachfront property, the beach side gives you a faster exit route.
Watch for ice water. Most vendors use tap water. Some use buckets of iced water — this is generally considered poor form and can cause shock. Be aware of it, and do not do it yourself.
Getting around Koh Samui during Songkran requires more planning than the rest of the year. Here is what you need to know.
Motorbikes. Avoid them on 13 April if you are not an experienced rider. The roads are wet, crowded, and visibility is reduced by water. Accident rates spike during Songkran across Thailand. If you must travel by motorbike, stick to side roads and go slowly.
Songthaews. The shared red trucks run regularly around Chaweng. They are generally fine for moving between areas once the main road action dies down (after 4 PM). In peak hours, expect delays.
Grab. The app works in Koh Samui. Useful for evening journeys once the water fights wind down. Surge pricing applies during peak Songkran hours — expect to pay more than usual.
Walking. If you are staying in Chaweng, walking is the most practical option on 13 April. ARKbar’s location on Chaweng Beach puts you in the middle of everything on foot, which is exactly why beachfront stays are worth the premium during this period.
Songkran is a joyful festival, but it has cultural roots that are worth respecting. Following a few simple rules keeps it enjoyable for everyone.
Do not spray monks or elderly people. Buddhist monks are not fair game. Elderly Thais may also prefer not to be soaked — approach with a gentle pour rather than a direct blast, or leave them entirely. Read the situation.
Avoid ice water on strangers. Using ice-cold water on people is considered aggressive and has caused injuries. Stick to ambient temperature water. If you are soaked with ice water, it is still generally best to keep it good-natured.
Watch out for scooters in the water zones. Even when roads are technically closed or congested, bikes still try to pass. Stay aware of moving vehicles, especially if you are caught up in the crowd.
Drink water, not just everything else. The combination of heat, sun, and alcohol is a reliable recipe for a bad afternoon. Pace yourself and stay hydrated throughout the day.

Location matters more during Songkran than any other time of year. The ability to walk back to your room mid-day — to dry off, change, and come back out — is a genuine quality-of-life difference.
Chaweng is the right area to stay. Everything happens here: the main water fight on the beach road, the beach clubs, the evening venues, and the best concentration of food options. Staying outside Chaweng means transport problems on the busiest days.
ARKbar Beach Club and Resort sits directly on Chaweng Beach. You are walking distance from the main action, you have on-site Songkran events, a beachfront pool, and HIP Restaurant open from 7 AM for breakfast through to 1 AM for late-night food. Prices book out early around Songkran — this is not a last-minute decision. See the full guide to the best Songkran parties in Koh Samui for venue-by-venue advice.
The water fight winds down by 4–5 PM as the sun drops and the road action cools. What comes after is the part many visitors overlook — and it is genuinely good.
Get dry, clean up, eat something proper. The HIP Restaurant menu runs from Thai curries and stone-baked pizza to fresh salads and international mains — open through to 1 AM.
From sunset, the beach parties take over. ARKbar runs DJ sets from sunset nightly, with fire shows from 8 PM through to midnight. On 10 and 13 April, headline acts perform at ARKbar — see the full events schedule for confirmed lineups.
