Songkran celebrations are spread across Koh Samui, but the serious action concentrates in Chaweng. The main water fight runs along Chaweng Beach Road. The best beach club events are on the beachfront. The strongest nightlife is within walking distance of it all.
That said, the island offers different Songkran experiences depending on what you want — from the controlled intensity of Chaweng to the local, low-key feel of Fisherman’s Village. This guide covers all of it, with honest recommendations on where to spend your time based on your priorities.

Chaweng Beach Road is the centre of Songkran in Koh Samui. On 13 April — the main day — the road closes to normal traffic and becomes the island’s biggest communal water fight. Pickup trucks mounted with water tanks drive slowly through the crowds. Locals set up stations with buckets of water and barrels of ice. Vendors line the road selling water guns from ฿80.
Peak action runs from around 10 AM to 4 PM. The atmosphere is genuinely joyful — this is not just tourists spraying each other, it is the whole community involved. Families, children, local businesses, and visitors all share the same road and the same buckets.
Best entry point: the northern end of Chaweng Beach Road near Central Samui. The southern stretch near Soi Green Mango is the most concentrated. Arrive before 9 AM if you want to move freely.
ARKbar Beach Club sits directly on Chaweng Beach and is the most complete venue for Songkran on the island. It is open daily from 7 AM through to 2 AM, with a full programme across the Songkran period.

Fire shows — Every night from 8 PM through to midnight, ARKbar’s fire performers take the beach. During Songkran, this is one of the most dramatic shows on the island. The ARKbar fire show is a Koh Samui landmark.
Pool party — Daily from 2 PM. Pool access is ฿500 minimum spend. During Songkran week, the pool becomes a daytime party hub before the evening programme begins.
Beach party nights — Wednesday and Friday are dedicated beach party nights as standard. During Songkran week, special programming replaces the regular schedule across all nights.
Food — HIP Restaurant at the street-side entrance runs all day from 7 AM to 1 AM. Thai food, international mains, pizza, all-day breakfast, and a full cocktail menu. See the full menu here. On 13 April, having a table booked at HIP means a guaranteed base for the day.
A calmer alternative to Chaweng, Fisherman’s Village on the north coast runs a local Songkran celebration with a distinctly community feel. The walking street comes alive in the evening. Water fighting is lighter here — better for those who want to experience the festival without full immersion. Good independent restaurants, relaxed vibe, local and expat crowds mixed together.
Koh Samui’s second largest beach area runs its own, quieter version of Songkran. Lamai Beach Road sees water activity on 13 April but at a fraction of Chaweng’s scale. A good option if you want the cultural experience without the volume. Limited major event programming compared to Chaweng.
Once the water fight winds down, the evening shift begins. The Soi Green Mango area of Chaweng runs its usual late-night programme throughout Songkran. Beach clubs including ARKbar run DJ sets and fire shows from sunset through to 2 AM. The concentration of options within walking distance of the beachfront makes Chaweng the clear choice for full-day and full-night coverage.
Songkran has Buddhist roots — the water represents cleansing and the beginning of a new year. Local temples across the island hold merit-making ceremonies and Buddha image processions, particularly on 13 April morning. Worth seeing before the main street action begins. Wat Plai Laem and Wat Phra Yai are among the most visited.
10 April — Pre-Party Night
The best warm-up event on the island. ARKbar hosts a headline act for the pre-Songkran party — DJ sets from sunset, fire show from 8 PM, full beach club running to 2 AM. This is the right night to arrive, check in, and start the festival properly. See the events page for the confirmed lineup.
11–12 April — Build-Up Days
Water activity is scattered and low-key. Use these days to explore the island, visit a temple, book a boat trip, or get ahead on rest. Evening beach club events run as normal. Good days to do a thorough meal at HIP Restaurant before the busy days hit.
13 April — Main Day
The peak of Songkran across Thailand. Chaweng Beach Road from 10 AM. ARKbar’s headline event in the evening — the single best Songkran party on the island. Fire show from 8 PM. If you only commit to one evening during the entire Songkran period, this is it. Book ahead.
14–15 April — Wind-Down
Still active. Water activity continues at lower intensity. Beach clubs remain open with full programming. A good time to move slower, recover, and enjoy the quieter side of Chaweng before departure. Evening options remain strong.
Food access during Songkran can be unpredictable — some restaurants close or reduce hours, street food options multiply, and the demand on remaining kitchens is high. Here is where to eat reliably.
HIP Restaurant — Open daily 7 AM to 1 AM throughout Songkran week. Full menu available here. All-day breakfast, Thai mains, stone-baked pizza, burgers, salads, and a complete cocktail menu. Sitting at the street-side entrance of ARKbar Beach Club, it is positioned perfectly for both a pre-water-fight breakfast and a post-fight dinner.
Street food on Chaweng Beach Road — The water fight brings a parallel street food market. Grilled meats, pad thai, som tum, fresh coconut, and the usual Thai standards at standard prices. Bring cash in a ziplock bag — card machines and wet hands do not mix.
7-Eleven and Family Mart — Both chains remain open throughout Songkran. Useful for water, ice cream, snacks, and quick top-ups. Expect queues on 13 April.
Staying on or near Chaweng Beach eliminates most of the logistical problems that come with Songkran. Transport becomes difficult, road closures affect movement, and Grab surge pricing kicks in. The ability to walk back to your room is worth more than anything you save staying further away.
