Where to stay in Chaweng: which part of the beach?
It depends what you want from the night, and over New Year that matters more than the room. Chaweng is Koh Samui's longest and busiest beach, and it changes character from one end to the other. The centre is where the island parties. The ends are where it sleeps.
On most nights of the year you can stay anywhere and take a taxi. On 31 December you cannot rely on that. Chaweng Beach Road is packed with people and traffic crawls, ARKbar does not let cars in, and cars are hard to find until the early hours. So when you decide where to stay in Chaweng over New Year, the right question is not "which hotel", it is "can I walk".
We run ARKbar Beach Club on Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, with our own resort inside it. This guide is honest about every part of the beach, including the parts where we are not.
Three parts of one beach

- North end, towards the airport
North Chaweng
Calmer, with more space on the sand. A walk or a short ride to the centre.
- Fireworks over the bay at midnight
Central Chaweng
The busiest stretch, the beach clubs and the countdown.
ARKbar is here, on Chaweng Beach Road at Soi Green Mango.
- South, over the headland
Chaweng Noi
A smaller, quieter bay. You need a ride on New Year's Eve.
Central Chaweng: best for New Year's Eve
If the countdown is the reason for your trip, stay here. Central Chaweng is where the beach clubs, the restaurants and the nightlife sit along Chaweng Beach Road, and it is where the fireworks go up over the bay at midnight, above the Koh Samui New Year party at ARKbar.
- For: walking to the party and walking home, everything on your doorstep, the best of the beach.
- Against: it is the loudest part of the island over the holidays. If you want an early night on the 30th, pick your room carefully.
For a sense of what the centre is like after dark, see our guide to nightlife in Koh Samui.

North Chaweng: a little calmer, still close
A good middle ground. The northern end of the beach is quieter in the evenings, with more room on the sand in the day. It is also the side of Chaweng closest to the airport, which makes arrival day simple.
- For: calmer nights on the other days of your trip, and a walk along the sand to the centre.
- Against: from the far north end it is a long walk back at 2:00 AM. Check the distance before you book.
Chaweng Noi: quiet, and a ride away on the night
Best for a calmer stay, with a plan for the 31st. Chaweng Noi is the smaller bay to the south, separated from the main Chaweng Beach by a rocky headland. It feels like a different place, and on most nights that is the appeal.
- For: peace, a smaller beach, and an easy escape from the crowds.
- Against: on New Year's Eve you need a ride in and out of central Chaweng, on the one night rides are hardest to find.
Staying at ARKbar Beach Resort
The shortest possible walk to the countdown is a flight of stairs. ARKbar Beach Resort sits inside the beach club on Chaweng Beach, so on New Year's Eve the party is downstairs and your room is a walk away. Resort guests get free general entry on 31 December 2026. A table package is still needed if you want a table.
Premier Deluxe Room
The largest rooms, at 18 to 30 sqm, with queen or twin beds, a sofa and a furnished balcony over the resort. Close to everything, and a step back from the music when you want to sleep. See the Premier Deluxe Room.

Deluxe Room
16 sqm with a private balcony, in the quieter garden corner of the resort. The beach club is yours whenever you want it, then a calm room to come back to. See the Deluxe Room.

What about staying outside Chaweng?
It works for the rest of your trip, less so for the 31st. Koh Samui has quieter bases all round the coast. Bophut and Lamai are 15 to 20 minutes from Chaweng by taxi on a normal night, and the west coast is closer to an hour.
- Bophut and Fisherman's Village, on the north coast: charming, calm, and home to the Friday evening walking market.
- Lamai, to the south: the island's second big beach, lively but smaller than Chaweng.
- The north and west coasts: quiet, and a long way from the countdown.
If you do stay outside Chaweng, book your ride for the night in advance and arrange to meet it away from the busiest stretch of Chaweng Beach Road. Our New Year fireworks guide covers getting there and home in detail.
When should you book a hotel in Chaweng for New Year?
As early as you can, and ideally before November. In our experience the island fills from around 20 December, and the rooms within walking distance of the beach for 30 and 31 December are the first to go. Flights follow the same pattern; most routes in are run by Bangkok Airways.
- Book the room before you book anything else.
- Check the minimum stay. Many places set one over New Year.
- Ask how far the room is from the beach on foot, not by car.
The weather and the crowds for the month are in our guide to Koh Samui in December, and a full plan for the holiday is in 3 days in Koh Samui over New Year. December nights stay warm, with average lows around 24°C in the WMO climate normals for Ko Samui. For island-wide travel, see the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
