Is 3 days in Koh Samui enough?
For New Year, yes. Koh Samui is small enough to drive around in an afternoon, and the things most people want from it, a good beach, a view, great food and one very big night, fit into three days without rushing.
The trick over New Year is pacing. 31 December is a long night, so the day before should set you up and the day after should let you recover. This itinerary does exactly that, built around New Year's Eve at ARKbar Beach Club on Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui.
It assumes you land on 30 December and stay in Chaweng. We are ARKbar Beach Club on Chaweng Beach, Koh Samui, so the island's east coast is our home ground.

Day 1, Wednesday 30 December: land and get your bearings
Keep the first day light. Samui's airport sits on the north east of the island, a short drive from Chaweng, and most flights come in through Bangkok Airways. Planes come in low over the resorts on their final approach, which is a strange and very Samui welcome.

Afternoon: the beach
Drop your bags and go straight to Chaweng Beach. It is the island's longest and busiest stretch of sand, and the best way to shake off a flight is to swim in it. If the sea is choppy, and at the end of December it sometimes is, a beach club pool does the same job with a drink in reach.
Sunset: Big Buddha
Take a taxi up to Big Buddha, Wat Phra Yai, on its small island joined to the north east coast by a causeway. The gold statue is the island's best-known landmark, and late afternoon is the best time to see it. Dress for a temple: shoulders and knees covered.
Evening: dinner, then bed
Eat back in Chaweng and call it a night before midnight. Tomorrow is the long one.
Day 2, Thursday 31 December: New Year's Eve
The day is about saving energy for the night. Everyone who has done New Year on Chaweng will tell you the same thing: do less in the day.

Morning: slow breakfast and the pool
Have a long breakfast, then find a sunbed. If you want an idea for breakfast, our guide to breakfast on Chaweng Beach has the list.
2:00 PM: go and rest
Go back to your room for a couple of hours. It feels like wasting a holiday afternoon. It is the single best thing you can do for your midnight.
5:00 PM onwards: the Countdown Beach Festival
Doors at ARKbar open at 5:00 PM, with international and local DJs from the start. The fire show runs on the sand at 8:00 PM, and at 12:00 AM the countdown ends with fireworks over Chaweng Bay. The party runs on long after.
- Get there before 9:00 PM. Queues build from then, and table check in closes at 9:00 PM.
- Walk if you can. Chaweng Beach Road is packed with people on the night and traffic crawls.
- Bring ID. It is adults only, 18 and over.
The full breakdown of the night, including where to stand for the fireworks, is in our Koh Samui New Year fireworks guide.

Day 3, Friday 1 January: recover and explore
Nothing before 11:00 AM. Nobody on the island is in a hurry on New Year's Day, and neither should you be.
Afternoon: Lamai and the rocks
Head south to Lamai, the island's second big beach, a short drive from Chaweng. At its southern end are Hin Ta and Hin Yai, the Grandfather and Grandmother rocks, a pair of granite formations that every Samui visitor ends up photographing. Lamai is less crowded than Chaweng and a good place to spend a slow afternoon.
Evening: Fisherman's Village
1 January 2027 is a Friday, and Friday evening is when Fisherman's Village in Bophut turns its main street into a walking market. Old wooden shophouses, street food, and a beachfront that feels a world away from Chaweng. It is the gentlest possible way to end the trip.
What if you have more than 3 days?
Add a boat day to Ang Thong National Marine Park, a group of more than forty islands off the west coast, with kayaking and a viewpoint climb. The park is run by the Department of National Parks, and trips leave early in the morning and return by late afternoon.
If you are coming for longer over the holidays, read what Koh Samui is like in December for the weather and the crowds, and our guide to things to do on Chaweng Beach for day and night ideas.
Where should you stay for 3 days in Koh Samui?
In Chaweng. For a New Year trip, being able to walk to the countdown is worth more than anything else a hotel can offer. The whole question is covered in our guide to where to stay in Chaweng.
ARKbar Beach Resort
The resort sits inside the beach club on Chaweng Beach, so the countdown is downstairs and your room is a walk away. Resort guests get free general entry on 31 December 2026.
December on Samui is warm, with average highs around 29°C in the WMO climate normals for Ko Samui, and it gets drier towards the end of the month. For wider travel planning, the Tourism Authority of Thailand covers the island and the Gulf.
3 days in Koh Samui: your questions
Is 3 days in Koh Samui enough?
What is the best Koh Samui itinerary over New Year?
Where should I stay for New Year in Koh Samui?
How far is Chaweng from Samui airport?
What day of the week is New Year's Eve 2026?
Is Fisherman's Village open on New Year's Day?
What time does New Year's Eve at ARKbar start?
The one rule for this itinerary
Protect New Year's Eve. Keep 30 December light, rest on the afternoon of the 31st, and let 1 January be slow. Everything else in the plan can bend around the weather and how you feel.
And book the night itself early. The tables are on sale now, and the top tiers go first.
